FRISCO - Ezekiel Elliott’s recent tenure with the Dallas Cowboys came to an abrupt end this week after the veteran running back requested his release.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones granted the request, signaling the conclusion of Elliott’s season in Dallas, where he once shined as a cornerstone of “America’s Team.”
So, what’s the plan now? Zeke on Monday agreed to a deal with the Chargers, as first noted by the Schultz Report.
Elliott’s production significantly declined, appearing in 15 games but recording just 74 carries for 226 yards and three touchdowns. With Rico Dowdle emerging as the Cowboys’ top back, Elliott’s role diminished, and he was likely not in the team’s plans for their Week 18 finale against the Washington Commanders.
Agent Rocky Arceneaux expressed Elliott’s gratitude toward the Cowboys in a public statement.“I’d like to thank Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys for affording Zeke this unique opportunity in granting us our release.
Even though nothing is imminent, Zeke is excited about the possibilities and is grateful. He’s got a lot of good football left in him and will remain a Dallas Cowboy for life.”
But shocking some critics, he is with a playoff contender now.
.The Detroit Lions were a rumored suitor, given David Montgomery’s recent MCL sprain, while the Chargers, dealing with injuries to Gus Edwards, were also rumored to be in the mix. Both teams are pushing for deep playoff runs and might view Elliott as valuable depth.
And indeed, Zeke now gets one more shot with Los Angeles.
