Cowboys Letting Rookie QB Who 'Impressed' at Minicamp Slip Away

The Dallas Cowboys are refusing to sign a young quarterback who impressed the team during the rookie minicamp.

The Dallas Cowboys just wrapped up their rookie minicamp where they had an opportunity to see their rookies together for the first time. It also allowed them to evaluate some undrafted free agents and veterans trying to make a training camp roster.

One of the undrafted free agents who reportedly impressed the Cowboys' top brass with his minicamp performance was Mike Hohensee, the quarterback out of NW Missouri State. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy had highlighted Hohensee's showing in his opening remarks over the weekend.

"I do not recall a young quarterback coming in here on a tryout [basis] and commanding the huddle."

This understandably created buzz among Cowboys fans about whether Hohensee would be added to the training camp roster. However, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reported that the Cowboys don't intend to sign Hohensee at this time.

It is true that the Cowboys don't need another signal-caller on the roster. Behind Dak Prescott, they already have Cooper Rush and Trey Lance.

It's also true that Dallas doesn't have any quarterbacks on the roster beyond this season. All three players under contract are in the final year of their deals. And it's not like Rush and Lance have established themselves as must-retain QBs.

There is no harm in bringing Hohensee in as a fourth quarterback to the training camp and seeing what he is capable of. Allowing another team to take a chance in him after he already impressed the coaching staff in Dallas doesn't make a ton of sense.

Regardless of whether he makes it with the Cowboys, Hohensee is certainly an intriguing prospect. He passed for 1,974 yards and 22 touchdowns in nine games last season. He has an impressive career completion average of 68.9%. On top of his QB skills, he was also the punter for his team. These kinds of utility players are always valuable in the NFL.

The Cowboys could have had their own Taysom Hill but it looks like they are going to let him slip away.
