The Dallas Cowboys may sign former third-round pick and Pittsburgh Steeler center, Mason Cole this summer. According to a report, the Cowboys could add one more piece to their roster before this upcoming season by signing Cole. However, the Michigan product hasn’t been having any luck finding his next team after not playing well enough to remain with the Steelers. It should benefit the Cowboys’ offensive line if they sign someone like Cole despite his lack of production.
According to Pro Football Focus, Cole isn’t a liability since he only allowed two sacks while earning a 57.3 grade with four penalties. He’s still young at 28 and has plenty to prove with 73 starts under his belt across six seasons with three teams. Cole would essentially be a reasonable veteran to help fill the depth chart for incoming center Cooper Beebe. He isn’t a starter anymore by any means in the league but it would be a nice insurance policy for the rookie to avoid any overwhelming of snaps.
Cole may be a journeyman in his career after spending time with the Cardinals and Vikings too. However, he would still provide value for a team that seems to get younger at the offensive line again. Tyler Biadasz is off to Washington so they need to find their successor to help this line become like how it was. Beebe was a part of the two-man approach that the Cowboys took when they drafted Tyler Guyton in the first round of this year’s draft.
Dallas still has one of the best guards in the league with Tyler Smith and Zack Martin but nothing lasts forever. However, Martin is the veteran of this group and he’s already hinting at retirement. Here are some other potential destinations for Cole.

Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs don’t have the biggest need at the center position but they could consider adding some depth. Wanya Morris was among the many players on the team that was in some legal trouble this offseason so it doesn’t hurt to add an offensive lineman. They don’t have a lot of depth so it may be wise to start stocking up some to provide the best pass protection for Patrick Mahomes. Kansas City shouldn’t regret not picking up some depth on their run to their third consecutive Super Bowl.
Los Angeles Chargers
Corey Linsley was released from the team and does not plan to play in the league again. His journey may be over but it would open up the conversation for Cole to get in the mix. The Chargers don’t have a lot of money to spend on a center so this would be their best option. Cole is nowhere near as great as Linsley was but he’s a low-risk, cost-effective option that could fill the shoes. They were able to draft Joe Alt but he’s an offensive tackle that will be covering on the opposite end of the line so they need someone in the middle.
Carolina Panthers
It’s hard to imagine that Cole will switch positions considering that the Panthers need an offensive tackle. However, Carolina is shaping up to be one of the best upcoming NFC teams. They’ve been doing their homework to provide weapons and protection for second-year quarterback, Bryce Young. Incoming Ja’Tavion Sanders is going to need some help while he comes back from recovering from injury.
