One never knows what is going to come out of Dallas Cowboys' owner and general manager Jerry Jones' mouth when he steps in front of a horde of microphones. He fills up reporters' note pads like no other owner in the game.
He was asked a question Tuesday morning about Micah Parsons' contract negotiations and he told the media assembled there was a framework for a potential deal in the offering - confirming the exclusive reporting from our own Mike Fisher of CowboysCountry.com from Monday, March 23..
However, Jones might have gone too far when he threw shade at Parsons' agent David Mulugheta.
We have reported that there has been discussions of the parameters of the deal with Jones and Parsons - the idea of five years and $40 million per totaling $200 million, for instance, being in play.
With Jones, this is not uncommon. Jones, however said to the media something some think he might end up regretting.
"The agent is not a concern here....I don't know his name," Jones said. "I'm the one who has the sign the check and Micah is the one who has to agree to it."
It should be noted Mulugheta is one of the best-known agents the NFL Players Association certified. It is doubtful Jones did not remember his name; Fisher half-jokes that maybe Jerry simply can’t remember how to pronounce it.
Either way. Parsons heard the statement and he was moved to speak out, to say the very least.
"Facts! David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without @DavidMulugheta involved! Like anyone with good sense I hired experts for a reason," Parsons posted on X. "There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David!
“There will be no backdoors in this contract negotiation."
That’s strong stuff, but it’s created some confusion in Cowboys Nation. … in two areas.
One, it’s created a false impression that Micah is “opposing” Jones. But there is nothing adversarial about their relationship.
And two, some fans and reporters are posting that “Micah won’t negotiate without David by his side,” which is simply wrong.
Fisher has reported, again, that Micah and Jerry have met personally and talked contract multiple times.
After all, how do folks think they’ve worked their way to around five years and $200 million?
