Cowboys Officially End WR Parris Campbell’s Stint After Injury, Release Him with Settlement

If you take out the handling of Micah Parsons' contract, the Dallas Cowboys have had a very successful offseason. Between trading for George Pickens, Joe Milton and Kaiir Elam, bringing back Dante Fowler in free agency and having a strong draft, it was an active offseason in Dallas.

In keeping up with their reputation, though, the Cowboys’ front office made a few head-scratchers. Parsons contract is one thing, but trading for Kenneth Murray and letting Jourdan Lewis walk both raise fair questions.

The signing of wide receiver Parris Campbell was another questionable move. It had a small chance of working out, and it is officially over after Dallas released Campbell with an injury settlement.

Cowboys release WR Parris Campbell with an injury settlement

The Cowboys placed Campbell on season-ending injured reserve last week. He went down with a knee injury in practice that was later diagnosed as an MCL sprain. Those are generally not season-ending injuries, which might explain why the sides were able to negotiate his release from IR.

Either way, the settlement will compensate Campbell for the expected duration of the injury. It also gives him the freedom to sign with another team once he is healthy.

Dallas, meanwhile, doesn't have to keep Campbell on their roster or injured reserve and save some cap spacey in the process. These settlements are viewed as a win for both parties, but you are still gutted for Campbell that his season is over before it even started.

If it's any silver lining, Campbell faced long odds to make the roster. The first five WR spots are seemingly locked up already: CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, KaVontae Turpin, Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo. That leaves room for maybe one more player, and the likes of Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks and Traeshon Holden are all having strong camps.

Injuries have unfortunately been the story of Campbell's career since the Colts drafted him in the second round back in 2019. He appeared in 15 games over his first three seasons before breaking out in 2022 to the tune of 63 catches, 623 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

Campbell was unable to replicate that success with the Giants in 2023, catching just 20 balls for 104 yards in 12 appearances. He won a Super Bowl with the Eagles last season, but was targeted eight times in the five games he was active during the reuglar season and he did not play in the playoffs.

Hopefully Campbell is able to shake this injury and latch on with another team before he loses another season.
