The Dallas Cowboys will undergo a quarterback search to replace backup QB Cooper Rush.
On Sunday, Rush agreed to a two-year contract worth up to $12.2M with the Ravens, ending his stay in Dallas. The organization will search for Dak Prescott's backup, and it appears the NFL draft could be the ideal option for a replacement.
Rush signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent in 2017, and other than a short stint with the New York Giants in 2020 before being signed back to the Cowboys' roster, the quarterback has spent the last eight years with Dallas.
Rush made 38 appearances and 14 starts as a member of the Cowboys, throwing for 3,463 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. In Prescott’s absence during the 2024-25 season, Rush completed 187 passes for 1,844 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 9-5 record as a starter.
Rush is considered one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league and the Cowboys need to replace his production.
The Cowboys entered the offseason immediately cutting ties with former first-round pick Trey Lance, knowing that Rush probably wouldn’t be back in 2025. With few free-agent options, the draft might be the only option to solve their backup quarterback issue.
According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the Cowboys may draft a quarterback to back up Prescott. Dallas holds 10 available picks entering the 2025 NFL Draft, and the Cowboys will likely draft another signal-caller. The Cowboys have the No. 12 pick in the first round and could reach for a quarterback with high value.
If the Cowboys elect to go another route, look for Dallas to swing back in Rounds 2 or 3 and get themselves a Jaxson Dart, or a Quinn Ewers to backup Prescott.
