Cowboys Poised For Jonathan Mingo vs. KaVontae Turpin Camp Competition

If Dallas truly believed that it already has the right guys? Cowboys COO Stephen Jones wouldn't have openly admitted the team is in need of an "explosive No. 2 receiver.''

The Dallas Cowboys have one of the best wideouts in the game in CeeDee Lamb but their wide receiver room as a whole remains in question.

The other wideouts already on the roster include Jonathan Mingo, Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, Jalen Brooks, Ryan Flournoy, and Parris Campbell.

Who will step up to be WR2?

If Dallas decides not to add an outside playmaker via trade or free agency, Tolbert will be counted upon to be "Robin'' to Lamb’s "Batman.''

Coming off of a career year with 49 receptions, 610 yards, and a team-leading seven touchdowns, Tolbert is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Cowboys will need him to take his game to even greater heights in order to roll out a competitive unit of pass catchers in 2025.

And of course, if Dallas truly believed that was in the cards? COO Stephen Jones wouldn't have openly admitted the team is in need of an "explosive No. 2 receiver.''

Turpin potentially could be an effective slot receiver after showing flashes of his ability as a receiver last season. However, one could argue Turpin’s 5-9, 153-pound frame is better suited for his All-Pro role as a specialist and not an every down wide receiver.

In other words, Turpin is explosive.

But he's not a No. 2 receiver.

What about the imposing 6-2, 220-pound Mingo, who the Cowboys are high on, as they are saying they had a second-round grade on him coming out of Ole Miss?

There is hope there, we suppose. Sometimes the grass is greener, and who’s to say Dak Prescott and head coach Brian Schottenheimer can’t unlock Mingo’s full potential during his new Dallas era following last year's trade from Carolina?

It’s no secret Dallas wants to impose their will on the ground, but an effective run game needs a respected passing attack. While the Cowboys have several in-house options to support Lamb at wide receiver, we still believe it would be wise to seek external help for a clear position of need. ...

Because the true projections from Tolbert, Turpin and Mingo don't add up to being enough.
