After deciding to part ways with Mike McCarthy, what will the Dallas Cowboys do to find their next head coach?
Jerry Jones and company are putting together a long list of interview candidates, and discussions are expected to heat up over the next few days. However, one potential solution could be to hire an already-established NFL head coach.
After all, why would the Cowboys heap praise on coach McCarthy one week, only to move on from him the next? Perhaps only if they had a significant trick up their sleeves.
Maybe that’s why The Athletic’s Chase Daniel predicted the Cowboys would place a phone call to the Pittsburgh Steelers about trading for Mike Tomlin.
“To me, I feel like it has to be an outside-the-box hire,” said Daniel. “I don’t know if you can just have a CEO-type coach with the Cowboys, because you have no say over that roster. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jerry calls about Mike Tomlin. I don’t think the Steelers need to move on from Mike Tomlin, but I think Tomlin needs to move on from the Steelers.”
It’s worth noting that the Steelers’ season did end on Saturday, which places Pittsburgh in offseason mode too.
Yet, would the Steelers consider trading a head coach who’s never had a losing season in 18 years at the helm? Especially one who’s won a Super Bowl and already ranks 12th on the NFL’s all-time coaching wins list?
Six of the coaches with more wins than Tomlin are already in the Hall of Fame, and two more (Bill Belichick and Andy Reid) are surely on their way too.
Still, would the Steelers have any interest in moving on from Tomlin? That remains to be seen, but it never hurts to try.
However, one interesting note here is the fact that McCarthy is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, so if the Cowboys come calling for Tomlin, could the Steelers then pivot to McCarthy? Crazier things have happened, especially in the NFL.
Tomlin holds a career win percentage of .630, which is better than McCarthy’s .608 win rate. However, if it’s playoff success Dallas is after, then McCarthy’s 11-11 playoff record outclasses Tomlin’s 8-11 mark.
Still, swapping one successful head coach for another one who’s likely well on his way to earning a gold jacket and bronze bust in the Canton Pro Football Hall of Fame, would be widely celebrated as a good move for the Cowboys. At this point, that could be just enough to get Jones to make an aggressive enough offer that just might get the Steelers to listen.
