Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance is unsure if he'll be returning to The Star in 2025.
Dallas Cowboys "dart throw" Trey Lance might end his stint with America's Team having just one start during his tenure.
Traded for a fourth-round pick in a deal with the Cowboys from the San Francisco 49ers, Lance was seen as a project player, and potentially as a backup to Dak Prescott.
That never eventuated as Cooper Rush was given the starting role when Dak went down with a hamstring injury. So Lance was forced to be back up again until Week 18 in a 23-19 loss to the Washington Commanders.
Lance was so-so in his first start in well over a year and has been with Dallas since 2023; it has been a long journey of learning his craft. After all, Trey only has five starts in his entire career, so there is room for improvement.
But now that Lance's rookie contract is up, a decision has to be made by both the Cowboys and Trey in seeing what 2025 looks like with each other.
For Lance, he isn't worried about the uncertain nature of his future.
"We'll see what happens," Lance said. "I really haven't even got into the whole free agency thing or anything like that, but I know it's coming. I know it's around the corner. But I'm going to take this and enjoy this [win] and just take some time to reflect and just how grateful I am for the time I have spent here."
It's a bold truth, about his status and Dallas' 2022 trade to get him: He has no idea what to expect ... and the Cowboys have no idea what they had.
So Dallas' "dart throw" will only have had one start since being traded to the team in over a year, so we can't say that it has been a success simply because Lance hasn't played aside from preseason games.
But now, like a host of his teammates, Lance will become a free agent and it isn't known if Dallas views him as a good backup to Prescott over Rush, or if Lance even wants to return.
That will get sorted out in due time, and until then, Lance seems rather content to go with the flow and Cowboys Nation are left shaking their heads at a wasted fourth-round pick that was used on a player who barely saw the field.
