The Dallas Cowboys probably weren't going to accomplish much last season anyway, but injuries derailed any hopes of making the playoffs. They are hoping for better injury luck this year, but the latest news following mandatory minicamp is not a good sign of things to come.
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr., Dallas' third-round pick this year who is working his way back from a torn ACL, suffered a setback.
"He (Revel) is really, really interesting," Breer said. "It doesn't always workout - I know it's the easy thing to do - to sometimes pluck the injured guy. And he had a little bit of a setback with his knee, but I think he'll be OK. He would have been fighting to be the first corner taken if he hadn't gotten hurt."
Cowboys rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr. reportedly suffered an injury setback
This is the first Cowboys fans have heard of Revel suffering a setback.
You can understand why the team would want to keep a development like this under wraps, but Revel was out on the field during mandatory minicamp last week, OTAs and even rookie minicamp. While he worked off to the side with the rehab group in each setting, would he be "practicing" if the setback was recent or even significant?
That is why the fan base shouldn't hit the panic button just yet. Breer did not specify when the setback occurred and nobody on the Cowboys beat has mentioned anything about a setback.
That isn't to say Breer couldn't beat local reporters to a big scoop. He is a very accomplished and respected insider. However, the lack of context leads us to question when the setback happened.
It's possible it happened before the NFL Draft, which may explain why he dropped all the way to the third round. As Breer noted, Revel was a potential top-10 pick before the injury. Even with that in mind, it was shocking that he slipped all the way to pick No. 76.
Hopefully some clarity is provided soon. If Revel's setback was recent, it would likely delay his recovery timeline. That would open up more questions about a cornerback room that already could be without Trevon Diggs to start the year.
This would be a massive story in Dallas if it was recent. Or maybe it is just now being leaked. Either way, this is the last thing the Cowboys need after they seemingly escaped OTAs and minicamp without any major injuries.
