Mike Vrabel walked into an undesirable situation when he accepted the role as the Patriots' next head coach. Given how the team fared over the last five years, with 2024 being especially egregious, it wasn't what most would want to deal with in their first season with a new organization. Fortunately, his experience in the role has made it look almost seamless for Vrabel and his staff, with the roster management being particularly impressive.
From upgrading the defense to be far more dominant this upcoming season and improving the offense around Drake Maye to set him up for success in his second season, to handling some of the more questionable decisions with ease, Vrabel has pulled off one of the more noteworthy offseasons across the NFL. That has included how he's handled some tricky roster decisions, like trading quarterback Joe Milton III, which already looks like a wise choice.
Besides the projected impending drama behind the scenes due to Milton wanting to be a starter, which is no longer a concern, the quarterback is already showing why the Patriots would not have had the confidence to choose him over Maye if forced to decide between the two.
Cowboys reporters have echoed it since the quarterback arrived in Dallas, further proving that avoiding potential QB drama and instead signing a trusted veteran was the right move.
Although some might have considered trading a quarterback going into their second season a bit questionable, especially given the arm talent that he has, Milton has shown why Vrabel didn't hesitate to make the move.
Cowboys reporter Tommy Yarrish made that apparent with the latest update from minicamp last week by sharing the "Joe Milton experience was back" on the practice field, noting a "couple errant throws" were on display, which was a big reason the quarterback fell in last year's draft.
While Milton proved he could be a solid quarterback in the season finale game against the Bills last season, his inconsistency with questionable throws could often make him a liability on the field and an untrustworthy backup for Maye.
It's primarily why a veteran would be a better option for a team in the Patriots' position, who want to put all their focus behind their young quarterback and developing him the right way, as opposed to trying to accomplish that with two players vying for the same spot.
That adds even more reason for Vrabel to feel it was best to send Milton elsewhere, who now has Dak Prescott to work with and learn from, with some reporters even suggesting he could compete with the veteran for the starting job. The Patriots are fortunate to have avoided this this season, as it was a consistent talking point last year, despite Maye's impressive performance given his unfavorable circumstances.
