Cowboys Reveal Major Change in Jason Witten Plan

FRISCO — When the Dallas Cowboys chose to move on from Mike McCarthy, several surprising candidates emerged as potential options for the franchise. Among that contingent was former tight end Jason Witten.

Witten has no NFL head coaching experience, but his candidacy represented a wide net the Cowboys appeared to cast in this search. That list included names like Pete Carroll and Deion Sanders.

This is not to say though that Witten could not eventually be up for such a job. To his credit, he has built a powerhouse in the Texas private school realm at Argyle Liberty Christian, winning back-to-back state championships with the Warriors.

Even after Dallas officially hired Brian Schottenheimer for the job, some speculated that special terms could be in place to secure a spot for Witten on the staff. Unfortunately for those dreamers, that will not be the case.

The Cowboys informed on Monday that the team will not go that direction just yet.

The Cowboys showed in their head coaching search their affinity for those familiar with The Star. While Jerry remains very fond of Witten as a leader, the team has opted not to utilize him on the staff this season.

Nonetheless, Brian Schottenheimer's staff is starting to take shape with Matt Eberflus returning to Dallas as the defensive coordinator and Nick Sorensen earning the position of special teams coordinator.

Soon, Schottenheimer will have his staff together and they will be able to attack what should be a busy offseason between free agency and the NFL Draft.
