FRISCO - Last week, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dallas Cowboys' top-secret plan to hire Deion Sanders to be the next head coach - against "Coach Prime's'' stated wishes, so maybe Schefter thinks Jerry Jones is going to kidnap him - was "heating up.''
That "report'' flies in the face of what Sanders has told us, that he simply doesn't want the job. ... a factual obstacle that ESPN's "insider'' has chosen to ignore.
As the Cowboys continue to struggle under lame-duck coach Mike McCarthy, who as we have been reporting since February is a virtual certainty to be replaced, Schefter is at it again.
This time he is taking an old and established possibility - Bill Belichick's potential move to Dallas - and attempting to advance the ball with a gross chunk of gossip more suitable for "Real Housewives'' than for a serious journalistic outlet.
Schefter was allowed on ESPN before it's "Monday Night Football'' telecast of what would be Dallas' loss to the Houston Texans and he actually said ...
"Lots of speculation swirling about what the Cowboys will do. "People have even thought about Bill Belichick having been spotted in Dallas last week."
Wait. What?
Our understanding is that Belichick may have indeed been in Dallas but that officially it was for a speaking engagement. That of course does not preclude the possibility that he also snuck around for a meeting with the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones ... and if that turns out to be true?
We'll add it to Jerry's "top-secret'' legacy of Jimmy Johnson at Mia's and Bill Parcells at Teterboro.
But at this stage? There is nothing new about reporting a connection of sorts between Belichick and Jones (though we can tell you that Jerry has exaggerated it) that might make him a candidate. And what Schefter really seems to be doing - "It's Deion!'' last week and "It's Belichick!'' this week - is some awkward combination of spitballing and gossiping.
If and when ESPN has real news about the coming Cowboys coaching search, it is hoped it is done in a serious-minded way ... which is how we vow to approach it as well.
