FRISCO - It can't happen.
Not now.
That's the view of our Dallas Cowboys insider Mike Fisher, who believes that a move on the in-trouble Texas Longhorns receiver Isaiah Bond "would be a violation of everything coach Brian Schottenheimer has done since the day he was hired.''
The Cowboys have emphasized their search for an "explosive No. 2 receiver'' to pair with CeeDee Lamb, but with no action taken during the NFL Draft, fans expect something substantive to be coming soon.
You know all The Usual Suspects, from Keenan Allen to George Pickens to Amari Cooper and more.
A wideout who is also available? The undrafted Bond.
Earlier this month, Bond turned himself in to Frisco police because of an outstanding warrant for his arrest on a charge of sexual assault. Bond, 21, was released after posting $25,000 bail. His legal team then took action.
Following the release of a shocking affidavit, Bond and his representation filed a defamation lawsuit against his accuser in the United States District Court in North Texas. A 17-page legal complaint and explanation was sent to all NFL teams by his agent, Damien Butler.
However, no teams took a gamble by drafting Bond. That puts him in the free agent market to gain a camp invitation and potentially earn a contract the hard way.
For teams desperate for receiver depth, like the Cowboys, is Bond worth a dart throw?
One NFL team source tells insider Fisher, "Let's see if he's proven innocent. Let's see what happens when the dust settles.''
Fine. But ...
If we consider Dallas' 2025 draft class, it has nine players who have incredible leadership reputations, experience captaining their teams and a proven strong love for the sport, which tells you they don't get into off-the-field messiness like this.
That puts Bond on the short end of the stick here, because that's not the character a "table-pounding-for-culture" coach such as Schottenheimer wants in his locker room.
As Fish points out, "Every single day, in public and in private, in team meetings and in individual meetings, Schottenheimer has pounded the table pushing for 'classy bullies.' Tough guys who are good guys.
"How do you preach that for two months and then suddenly sign this guy?''
Yes, Bond is innocent until proven guilty. But Fish says Dallas has done "more research than any team'' on this case (as can be expected, given that it all unfolded in the Cowboys backyard) ... and passed. ...
As did 31 other teams.
Bond is an excellent receiver prospect who can be signed at a very low risk ... but this organization has officially entered a culture change.
For the sake of Schottenheimer's credibility, Fish says, they simply cannot sign Isaiah Bond.
