“Super Bowl champions."
The Dallas Cowboys missed the playoffs last season after having to deal with a host of injuries to star players on both sides of the ball. The disappointing season resulted in head coach Mike McCarthy’s departure this offseason.
Now, former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is the franchise’s head coach, and he has not been shy about the team’s goal being winning a Super Bowl in his first season.
Schottenheimer’s confidence and belief appear to have already rubbed off on his players, according to one prominent Dallas insider. All-Pro Left guard Tyler Smith was not shy about what he feels the expectations for the Cowboys this season are.
“Super Bowl champions. That’s always the expectations,” Smith said, per Jon Machota, before following up with how realistic a goal he thought that was. “I think it is a realistic goal.”
Fans reacted to Smith’s confidence on social media.
“Well the cowboys have a better shot at winning a super bowl than he does getting a contract on time. So that’s something,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Roster was good last year too btw. Just had an insane amount of injuries to a lot of our best players. People seem to ignore/forget that,” one Cowboys fan added.
“How many times have we heard a player say this but the team doesn’t deliver because it shrunk in the bright lights when it mattered most? I’ll believe it if/when I see it,” someone else wrote.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Cowboys fare in Schottenheimer’s first season.
