Cowboys Tyler Guyton Gets Urgency Review From Coach Brian Schottenheimer

Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer says Tyler Guyton was one of the first people to arrive this offseason, a sign of his understanding of what is at stake.

FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer on Thursday here inside The Star interrupted his own train of thought to make mention of a young talent that is a focus of concerned fans of "America's Team.''

"I'd be remiss,'' the new coach said, "if I didn't mention Tyler Guyton. He's having a terrific offseason. He's working his (butt) off, he looks great."

Schottenheimer added that Guyton was one of the first people to arrive this offseason to get to work at OTAs.

And that new level of urgency comes with a reason.

Said the coach: “He understands how important this year is for him, and not just for him, but for our football team.”

Meaning ...

Future Hall-of-Famer Zack Martin announced his retirement from football this offseason. Tyler Booker was drafted in the first round to fill that void. It ought to work.

Last year, Guyton was drafted in the first round as the heir to Tyron Smith, who also hung 'em up this offseason on his way to Canton.

Guyton, the Oklahoma product, selected at pick 29 by Dallas in last year's NFL Draft, struggled in 2024 and didn't full hold on to the job as a first-teamer.

At 6-8 and 330, he's still adjusting from having been a basketball player, still adjusting from playing on the right side at OU to the left side now, still adjusting as he grows into his 23-year-old body by committing himself to the weight room.

The offensive-minded head coach has mentioned the influence that new offensive coordinator Klayton Adams and new O-line coach have imprinted on his young lineman.

Said "Schotty'': "I think the influence of Klayton, the influence of Connor Riley, I think that package was so important for us, and I think we hit a home run."

The coach means that his assistant hirings are "home runs.''

What needs to happen is that the pick of Guyton is the same. And it's urgent for it to happen soon.
