The Dallas Cowboys have some decisions to make as injuries have already decimated the team’s offensive line a little more than one week into NFL training camp. On July 28, 2025, the Cowboys were dealt concerning news with both Rob Jones and Tyler Guyton expected to miss time.
This is in addition to Terence Steele who is back on the practice field but is battling an ankle injury. These string of injuries mean the Cowboys may need to get creative to find a solution for the team’s offensive line woes.

USA Today’s K.D. Drummond offered several free agent options Dallas could explore. One scenario is sure to excite Cowboys fans ahead of the season.
A reunion with eight-time Pro Bowl tackle Tyron Smith? Let’s dive into whether Dallas could kick the tires on a potential reunion with Smith.
Could the Cowboys Make a Surprise Run at Tyron Smith?
Smith signed with the New York Jets in 2024 playing 10 games for a franchise other than Dallas for the first time in his career. The legendary offensive lineman signed a one-day deal with Dallas back in April to allow him to retire as a member of the Cowboys.
Dallas bringing back Smith would not require the $97 million deal the veteran once signed, but the team may need to convince the star to give up his newfound life as a retiree.

“Flashing back to March, the club re-signing their future Hall of Famer in order to give him his proper goodbye, allowing Tyron Smith to retire as a Dallas Cowboy,” Drummond wrote in a July 28, 2025, story titled, “Top free agent options at tackle after Cowboys avoid season-ending injury to LT Guyton.” “They might want to pick up the phone and see if watching people report to training camp has stirred some juices up. It’s a long shot, but Smith started 10 games last year, and his 23 combined starts over his last two years is technically the most he’s seen in a stretch since 2018-2019.
“It’s not like Smith is coming back for the dog days of August, but perhaps there’s a world where the team talks him into returning after camp, giving him a six-week window to get himself back in game shape to help for the stretch of the season.”
Cowboys LT Tyler Guyton Could Return vs. Eagles in Week 2: Insider
It remains to be seen how persuasive the Cowboys front office could be to push Smith to give up his brief retirement. Injuries defined the end of Smith’s career with the veteran missing significant time in nine straight seasons.

Smith may be the most intriguing option for Dallas but that does not make it realistic. Drummond names Jedrick Wills, Germain Ifedi and George Fant as additional options for the Cowboys to explore.
Guyton could return to the field sooner rather than later. There is a chance Guyton could play versus the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2, per DallasCowboys.com’s Patrik Walker.

“Tyler Guyton (bone fracture/bruise in his knee) has a good chance of returning in time to take play when #Cowboys face Eagles in the season opener — barring a setback or an abundance of caution,” Walker detailed in a July 28, message on X. “Better odds: back for the home opener vs. the Giants in Week 2. Disaster averted.”
