When the Baltimore Ravens signed former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Chidobe Awuzie in free agency, it could have made Marlon Humphrey, a two-time All-Pro defensive back expendable to trade.
The 28-year old former Alabama Crimson Tide player, who was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft could spell Jourdan Lewis who departed this offseason. When Lewis left it put Dallas in a situation where it had a gaping hole in their secondary.
NFL writer Anthony Palacios brought up the Cowboys as a possible landing spot for Humphrey in the event the Ravens were looking to move him.
"The Dallas Cowboys lost a free-agent gem in Jourdan Lewis, but they're rolling the dice on Kaiir Elam after the recent trade with the Bills," Palacios wrote. "Trevon Diggs is returning, but his future is up in the air despite signing a long-term deal two years ago."
Palacios, who writes for Last Word on Sports, was not finished opining on the Cowboys' secondary.
"The same can be said about DaRon Bland, who's been battling injuries, too, but the team will probably play it by ear," Palacios said. "The team should find an immediate answer and Marlon Humphrey could be a solid veteran who may change the landscape of this team's secondary."
The writer seems misinformed on Bland and Diggs; neither is going away, Bland is healthy and Diggs is rehabbing with the hope of being ready in Week 1.
Humphrey had a play-making year in 2024. He recorded 67 tackles and six interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time in his storied career. ... and was named All-Pro.
This would clearly be a good move for Dallas to make. Elam is not going to inherit the position immediately, if at all, and the Cowboys could use a plug and play corner who can start day one. Humphrey would be such a guy, if he can be obtained at a reasonable value.
