The Lions could use some good PR. It's been an offseason to forget in Detroit, and while the team's still the division favorite heading into training camp, it's probably by the smallest margin of the last 2-3 years. Ironically enough, the NFC North's Good Vibes team is in desperate need of some.
And what's better for vibes than a big trade for a major name at a position of need? Is it necessary? Nope! Is it realistic? It is not. But does any of that matter? Never. The Lions could make everyone forget about Ben Johnson (or was it Bob Johnson?) with one simple little trade for star(ish) pass rusher, and Bleacher Report has the perfect name: New York Giants' edge Kayvon Thibodeaux.
"A potential Kayvon Thibodeaux trade has made sense ever since the New York Giants drafted Abdul Carter to team up with Brian Burns. However, having three good pass-rushers isn't a bad thing and it's possible the Giants hold on to their 2022 first-round pick for a while. Still, considering shortcomings elsewhere, trading Thibodeaux to address a larger need would be logical, especially if the team is still alive as the deadline approaches. I get the feeling that will actually be the case, as Russell Wilson could have a redemption season in him thanks in part to the emergence of Malik Nabers. If that's how things go down, we are again looking at Washington, Green Bay and Detroit. In this case, Thibodeaux is the consolation prize because he's not close to as established as Hendrickson. The Lions have more money to spend than the Commanders and may feel the need to at least outbid them here to keep up with the Joneses in the NFC North."
Realistically, I don't think Thibodeaux's going anywhere – if any Super Bowl in the last half decade has taught us something, it's that you need to get home with four guys – but it's a fun idea to think about. The Lions (reportedly) spent all offseason trying to land another star pass rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson and, uh, didn't get it done. But maybe that's because they were waiting to pull off a more dramatic, bombshell mid-season trade? I hadn't considered this fun alternative – I just sorta assumed that the Lions' front office dropped the ball.
Maybe it'd work, maybe it wouldn't. It would be fun, though, and Lions fans could use some of that right now.
