A notable MLB insider claims he is under the impression the Chicago Cubs are willing to sell off the cream of their minor league crop to make a blockbuster trade before this month’s MLB trade deadline.
The Cubs have been one of the big surprises of the 2025 MLB season. Not because they are good. But because they have a top-five record in the league heading into their game against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. The defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers are still the team to beat this year. However, the Cubbies are just a few key pieces away from being a serious threat to dethrone them in October.
That is why they have been linked to various trade rumors ahead of the July 31 MLB trade deadline. Yet, with so many teams still in the thick of the Wild Card chase, there is a lot of competition for a small pool of talent that will be available. So, how far is Chicago willing to go to get a player that could help get them to the World Series in the fall?
“I get the impression the Cubs are ‘all-in’ to win this year and will trade Owen Caissie or Kevin Alcántara if that lands them the right pitcher(s). Caissie’s name in particular has come up a lot in my conversations and texts with front office execs in both leagues.”

The two youngsters are currently ranked first (Cassie) and fourth (Alcantara) in the Cubs’ minor leagues on MLB.com. The former is at 43 on their list of the top 100 prospects in the game. So while Cassie is among the best the Cubs have, he isn’t an uber-elite in the minors. Which makes a big difference in what Chicago will be able to get in a deal.
Nonetheless, it says a lot about what the front office thinks of this team and their potential to get the club back to the World Series for the first time in nearly a decade. It may also be further evidence of rumors that Kyle Tucker will hit free agency this offseason, and they are not overly confident they will be able to re-sign him.
