It turns out a series with the Athletics was just what Seiya Suzuki and the Cubs needed. On Wednesday, Chicago's bats continued to torch the A's with a 10-2 win, moving the Cubs' record to 5-4 overall.
Entering the series with only one home run dating back to the Tokyo Series against the Dodgers, Suzuki is now leaving Sacramento with four total on the season. Two of those the three he hit against the Athletics occurred in Chicago's dominating performance to complete the series sweep.
First, Suzuki drilled a second-inning pitch over the left field wall to put the Cubs up 4-0. Suzuki's bomb was a three-run blast, which added to their early 1-0 lead.
And just two innings later, Suzuki was back up to bat and gave some love to the other side of the ballpark. The 30-year-old right fielder got enough under a pitch for his second home run of the game and, this time a solo shot.
Suzuki would finish the game going 3-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored. He entered the game only hitting .229, but his average will surely creep up to respectability if he carries his hot bat into Chicago's next series.
The Cubs will now enjoy a day break to travel before welcoming the San Diego Padres to Wrigley Field. Their three-game stand with the Padres gets underway on Friday followed by another inter-league matchup as the Texas Rangers come to town.
Now in his fourth MLB season, Suzuki could be on track to top the 21 homers he hit in 2024 as he looks to set a new single-season best.
