FRISCO - As rumors about a blockbuster "substantive" trade gain steam, Dallas Cowboys fans are suddenly dreaming about hearing the name of Travis Hunter at Thursday night's NFL Draft. Meanwhile, after a favorable court ruling, Hunter's father will get to see his dream about watching his son get drafted in person.
After owner Jerry Jones lit a match Tuesday afternoon by volunteering that the Cowboys are working on at least two major trades, ESPN draft guru Todd McShay threw gas on the fire by saying a Dallas trade up from No. 12 to No. 2 to select the Heisman Trophy two-way star "makes a ton of sense."
While that long-shot scenario may or may not play out, Travis Hunter Sr. will indeed be on hand in Green Bay.
The father, who is serving three years of probation from 2023 gun and drug charges in Florida, received permission this week from a judge to make the special trip. The terms of his probation prevented Travis Sr. from attending the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York last December.
"I want to say something to my father. He's not here and be able to make it, but I know you watching on TV," Hunter said during his acceptance speech. "Dad, I love you. All the stuff you went through… I did it for you, man. All the times that you didn't get to see me, or the time you came to see my games."
Hunter, who excels at both receiver and cornerback, is expected to be drafted in first three picks, possibly by the Cleveland Browns at No. 2.
Hunter Sr. will be restricted to his hotel and the draft grounds in and around Lambeau Field.
