Stephen Jones discussed the health of quarterback Dak Prescott with a very inquisitive media and answered the question as to whether the Pro Bowl signal-caller will be ready for the beginning of the offseason program.
"He'll have some limitations yeah, but you know Dak, he's a worker. We're thrilled with where he is," Jones said.
One thing the Cowboys do not have is a verifiable backup to Prescott, like they had last season in Cooper Rush. They have journeyman Will Grier, who does not have much game experience, but Jones said they are actively looking for some help there.
Prescott had an injury-riddled year in 2024 and was placed on injured reserve while Rush led the team. The team failed to make the playoffs with Rush at the helm.
Prescott tore his hamstring, with the tendon becoming disconnected from the bone. He eventually underwent surgery, which therefore ended his season. He's been rehabbing the injury ever since, and Prescott was seen in recent weeks throwing the ball again.
However, an insurance policy is still needed in case Prescott goes down again or is not ready to start camp.
"Yes, still an option that we're looking at … We can do it via trade, what can do it via what's available out there… trade is one of them and certainly signing available guys are one of them," Jones said.
There are those in the building who believe Grier is a viable answer. Dallas is certainly eying QBs at some point in the NFL Draft. And a flirtation with a trade for Patriots backup Joe Milton is now an open secret.
Jones admitted the Cowboys are probably going to have to settle while they look for the best candidate possible. They are not going to find the perfect candidate on the streets.
"I think we look at the full package, you're probably not going to get all things just right or exactly what you want," Jones said. "But, at the same time you want to get the very best guy that we think gives us the best chance to go out and compete with [Will] Grier and be good in that room with Dak and Grier and whoever else we add."
