Dallas Cowboys Have Troubling Report Surface On Dak Prescott And Trey Lance During 1st Week Of Practice

Dak Prescott and Trey Lance are reportedly underperforming during the start of the Dallas Cowboys training camp this month. The two quarterbacks were expected to elevate their game this summer before a critical offseason for the two players.

Dak Prescott has a big 2024 season ahead

Prescott is looking to sign a contract extension with the Cowboys. With the quarterback market exploding, Prescott is expected to make around $60 million annually if he has a great 2024 season in Dallas. Because of the questions surrounding the Cowboys re-signing Prescott, there is speculation Lance could play himself into the Cowboys QB1 job for the 2025 season if he excels this year.

The Dallas Cowboys QBs have been off this month

According to Jon Machota with The Athletic, Prescott and Lance were rusty during practice last week:

There have been several early on — certainly more than touchdown passes. Dak Prescott has been picked off by CB DaRon Bland, CB Jourdan Lewis and LB Eric Kendricks. Trey Lance and Cooper Rush have each also turned it over at least once in team drills.

Prescott’s start to training camp is concerning for an offense that needed a near MVP season to win the NFC East last season and has a roster that has regressed in the offseason. Prescott wore a walking boot earlier this month as a precaution for his ankle. One has to wonder if the ankle is bothering him at practice.

Trey Lance is behind Cooper Rush for QB2

Lance was expected to eclipse Cooper Rush for the QB2 job early in training camp. Machota thinks Rush has managed to hold on to the position, as Lance has been conservative in practice:

The pads haven’t even come on, so it’s difficult to be too critical. But if the Cowboys were opening the season tomorrow, Lance would be third on the depth chart behind Prescott and Rush. Lance hasn’t pushed the ball down the field much. It’ll be interesting to see how that changes as camp goes along.

Lance will have to show off his arm this preseason if he wants a crack at a QB1 job from any team in the league next year.
