FRISCO - It appears that Dalvin Cook's Dallas Cowboys debut is coming like a freight train.
With the Cowboys having the worst run game in football, averaging just 77.2 yards per game, the bye week has clearly given the coaching staff enough information to say that Cook deserves his shot.
Head coach Mike McCarthy stated that Cook is in "position to play" against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. Then came Dallas COO Stephen Jones having revealed when we will know if Cook suits up or not.
"I know they're going to make that call tomorrow," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. "Dalvin's been doing the job and doing his work week in and week out like the professional he is. So he's been great to have on the team and Mike [McCarthy] and Shotty [Brian Schottenheimer have been talking to us about it's about time for him to get his opportunity. We'll see how everything goes tomorrow and make that call."
“Tomorrow” is here … and amid reports that Dalvin is “tearing it up” in practice? He’s moving on up.
Now, whether Cook's impending elevation from the practice squad is out of necessity or the fact that Cook is now "football ready" is debatable.
But it looms as a key decision in Dallas's attempt to gain something positive from its horror run game. The other interesting thing to think about is how the running back pecking order will look.
Conventional wisdom would say it will be Rico Dowdle and Cook as the one-two punch, with Ezekiel Elliott as a potential healthy scratch or even as a third-down back.
But could Dallas carry three or four running backs into the game? That doesn't seem feasible.
However, what does is Cook getting ample opportunities to prove his worth by taking a real share of carries.
