Dan Campbell takes nearly unanimous title among NFL head coaches

The NFL Combine in Indianapolis is a rare time where most head coaches and general managers in the league are in one spot for a chunk of days over the course of a week. As people make the rounds to the various media outlets on-site, some tentacles of questions can turn toward fun or silly.

Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports asked some NFL head coaches who they think could put up the most bench press reps. For some context, draft prospects have to put up 225 pounds as many times as they can when they do the bench press at the combine.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell of course played tight end in the NFL for 11 seasons, and at 6-foot-5, 265 pounds he is an imposing figure (just ask Lions kicker Jake Bates). So it's no surprise many of coaches Kinkhabwala asked named Campbell.

Kinkhabwala mentioned New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel as a candidate among head coaches to put up the most bench press reps. Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, another former player, was mentioned by some of coaches Kinkhabwala asked.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald said he'd "bet on myself" in a bench press competition. Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales offered a sleeper in Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, with Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris endorsing McVay due to him being "compact."

Sean Payton pokes fun at Dan Campbell while pivoting to different choice for strongest NFL head coach

Campbell was the first one who came to mind for nearly every coach. But Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who has known Campbell since he came into the NFL as a player in 1999, stuck with Ryans as his choice while taking an opportunity to poke some fun at Campbell.

"I got to go with DeMeco (Ryans) still," Payton said. "I just saw him earlier today. I've been with Dan long enough to know there's an injury risk. I was in New York with him when we drafted him. I've been with him the whole time."

There's only one way to absolutely determine who is the strongest current NFL head coach, and settle the debate. If we know anything about Campbell, he'd be on board for getting on the bench to show the title belongs to him.
