On December 24, 2021, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers would connect with wide receiver Davante Adams. It was a three-yard toss into the end zone against division rival Chicago, giving Rodgers his 61st touchdown against the Bears, and one better than Packers legend Brett Favre.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Now, Adams plays in Las Vegas, and Rodgers in New York. But will that distance hold? Will two players who could change a franchise speak only of the times they were together on the Frozen Tundra? Perhaps a reunion is logical, due, and waiting to happen.
The New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders are two teams going nowhere fast. Destined for another season of “close but no cigar” both franchises have seen their best days in the rear-view mirror. When discussions about the Jets and Raiders are had, it is about Joe Namath and Kenny Stabler, or the famed “Sack Exchange” or the Silver and Black’s “Commitment to Excellence”.
Much can be gained by a trade. Adams to New York is a trade to be made this season. When playing at the American Century Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, Rodgers indicated he “will be playing with “one of the best receivers he’s ever played with ”again””.
Both spent eight seasons as teammates in Green Bay and Adams has commented Rodgers has been in his ear about a reunion. And while some say that new Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce might be seen as a wrench in such a deal, Las Vegas owner Mark Davis has loyalty only to his fathers legacy. Al Davis would be an absolute maverick and pull the trigger on such a deal if the dynamics were right, especially at the NFL Trade Deadline. Mark Davis will do the same, especially with the long shadow his father casts over the Las Vegas Strip.
It’s a trade that makes sense. It’s also a trade that will happen if for no other reason than Jets ownership needs this to win, and the Raiders need more in the cabinet.
Adams. Rodgers. The one duo who can deliver a championship to a Jets team who last won a championship when the league played only their third Super Bowl. As for the Raiders, Adams and whomever wins their 2024 quarterback starting quarterback sweepstakes is a partnership he isn’t much interested in.
