Underachieving to the tune of a 3-7 record and being noncompetitive in a multitude of games, the Dallas Cowboys will likely be in the market for a new head coach in 2025. If there's a silver lining to the eventual turnover, Mike McCarthy being in the final year of his contract makes for an easy split.
It only just started, but the Deion Sanders speculation already feels forced.
Cowboys legend Michael Irvin said he'll be in Jerry Jones' ear about hiring Sanders. Irvin also "reported" that Sanders would leave Colorado to coach the Cowboys if Dallas agreed to draft his son, Shedeur Sanders, who has quarterbacked the Buffaloes to an 8-2 record.
We also have talking heads like Colin Cowherd saying the Cowboys should trade Micah Parsons (!!!) and three first-round picks (!!) to move up and draft Shedeur. That would imply trading Dak Prescott. Like we said, the discourse has taken a turn for the worse.
Well, the conversation may finally end after Colorado landed one of the top quarterback recruits in the class of 2025.
Four-star quarterback Julian Lewis committed to Colorado, he announced Thursday on the Pat McAfee Show. Lewis agreed to play for Sanders over Georgia, which has won two national championships in the last three years, and Indiana. He had previously committed to USC.
Lewis is the No. 2 pocket-passer recruit for 2025, per ESPN. The Georgia native sets up as the successor to Shedeur Sanders, who could be the No. 1 overall pick in April. Sanders and Colorado likely would have shopped for a quarterback in the transfer portal if they failed to nab Lewis.
Lewis is Colorado's biggest recruiting win in the modern era. As arguably the nation's top recruiter, this has Sanders' fingerprints all over it.
It backs up the reports that Sanders is happy at the college level and all but confirms that he'll return to Boulder next year despite Irvin and the national media trying to escort him to Cowboys headquarters at The Star in Frisco.Sanders to the Cowboys would make for a great story, but Jerry Jones sounded disinterested when asked about it on 105.3 The Fan. We know Jones likes coaches with previous NFL experience. That would explain why big names like Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel are considered real possibilities.
While Sanders might eventually plot a move to whichever team drafts Shedeur, talk of him coaching Dallas should be put to rest in light of this news.
The Sanders buzz might be dead on arrival. Underachieving to the tune of a 3-7 record and being noncompetitive in a multitude of games, the Dallas Cowboys will likely be in the market for a new head coach in 2025. If ...
