'Delightfully Terrifying': Kay Adams' Confident Take About Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs

NFL host Kay Adams had bold words to sum up Patrick Mahomes’ 2025 mindset: “delightfully terrifying.”

'Delightfully Terrifying': Kay Adams' Confident Take About Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs

After interviewing the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback on her “Up & Adams Show,” Adams posted a clip on Instagram, praising Mahomes’ willingness to attack defenses deep this season.

“Patrick Mahomes is ready to let it rip & let his guys make plays downfield. Delightfully terrifying. You love to see it,” Adams wrote in her caption.

That confident take arrived as the Chiefs prepare for what could be their toughest AFC West battle in years, but also a season where Mahomes is aiming to get back to his big-play style.

Patrick Mahomes Eyes Aggressive Offense in Tough Division

The Chiefs have won the AFC West nine straight seasons, eight with Mahomes as the starter, but the 2025 race may be the closest yet. The Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders all made significant moves this offseason.

“It’s never easy, our division has always been tough,” Mahomes told Adams during their interview. “We’ve just done a good job of being able to win it. But we always feel like our division is tough, and that’s where we start.”

Mahomes pointed to the arrival of Geno Smith in Las Vegas and the coaching changes around the division as added challenges. Still, he believes Kansas City’s leadership gives them an edge.

“We believe we have the best coach, and if we take care of business, we can find a way to win the division,” Mahomes said. “If we win our division, we’ll be in position to get that home playoff game, play the playoffs at Arrowhead, and find a way to get to San Francisco for the Super Bowl.”

Chiefs’ Bounce-Back Mentality After Super Bowl Loss

The Chiefs enter 2025 still carrying the sting of last February’s 40-22 Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The defeat denied them a historic third straight championship and exposed offensive limitations, including Mahomes’ reliance on short passes.

Last season, Mahomes averaged a career-low 6.8 adjusted yards per attempt, one of the lowest in the league. A fully healthy receiver group, including Rashee Rice’s expected return and rookie Jaylen Royals, could allow him to stretch the field more.

That shift in style is exactly what Adams called “delightfully terrifying” for opposing defenses.

Coach Andy Reid Dismisses Doubters

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, also speaking with Adams recently, pushed back against questions about whether Kansas City can stay at the NFL’s top tier.

“There were so many close games, but that’s the National Football League,” Reid said. “When it’s all said and done, it’s winning the game. And we have winners.”

Reid stressed the importance of blocking out criticism and focusing on execution.

“We don’t listen to all the noise… We’ve got a great challenge coming up here,” he added, referencing the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Chargers in Brazil.

In a move that raised eyebrows, Reid announced Mahomes would play a significant portion of the preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals. For Mahomes, it was an opportunity to shake off the Super Bowl loss and fine-tune the offense before the games start counting.

What’s Next for Kansas City

With Adams highlighting Mahomes’ aggressive plans, the Chiefs’ offense could look more explosive than it has in recent years. If that happens, Kansas City may not just defend its division crown but also find itself right back in the Super Bowl mix.

For now, Adams’ choice of words, “delightfully terrifying,” might be exactly how the rest of the NFL feels about the Chiefs’ quarterback going deep again.
