Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton lays down the hammer on the reality of having great coaches on a staff

It's a great problem to have -- having such a great staff that every team in the NFL wants to try and recruit those coaches for better positions on their staff. And, that's kind of what the Denver Broncos are currently going through. Their staff was so good this year, making the playoffs in a rebuilding year with a rookie quarterback, that everyone wants a piece of the special season they put together.

Of course, the team still needs a ton of work. The offense wasn't as good as it could have been with Sean Payton leading the way, of course, that's widely because of the personnel they had on the field. The defense could use some better depth in the secondary. And, special teams could definitely get better, which is why they made a change there.

The Broncos have something good though, or else, other teams wouldn't be calling. They have had calls regarding Vance Joseph, and other assistant coaches. But, how does that make Sean Payton, the head coach, feel about his team?

“I think it’s a great sign, No. 1 for Vance [Joseph],” Payton said. “He’s smart. He’s a great communicator. He has a very calm and I would say strong voice. His players play extremely hard for him. He’s been a great addition to our staff.”

But, this isn't new to Sean Payton. He always puts together a great staff. And if you look around the league, there are so many people that he has hired in the past or people who worked under him in lower positions, that have seemingly climbed the ranks of NFL coaching.

As they call it in the NFL -- the Sean Payton tree has quite a few branches.

“My early years in New Orleans, I can recall the late Mr. Benson came down, and we had been winning and had a number of coaches that had interview opportunities,” Payton continued. “I think one season we had three or four. He said, ‘Coach, we have a lot of interest in our coaches now. What do you think about that?’ I said, ‘Mr. Benson, we shouldn’t worry.’ I said, ‘We should only worry when there’s no interest.’ I think that trying to find and hire quality coaches who are passionate about what they’re doing — guys like Vance his expertise. History has told us that, on a number of occasions, the second experience for guys can often be positive. … I think that Vance is going to be a head coach again.”

If staff members do get other jobs, higher jobs that they definitely deserve, the Broncos will replace them well. That's one thing Payton has done great at since he has been in Denver. He knows everyone in the business and knows how to assemble a staff.

So, if Joseph was able to land a head coaching gig, he would probably replace him well. That's one of the many perks of having a guy like Sean Payton as your head coach.
