Derek Carr stunned the sports world on Saturday when he announced that he has retired, and some have wondered if the former New Orleans Saints quarterback could return with a new team next season.
Carr decided to retire after doctors told him he needs surgery on his throwing shoulder. With no guarantee that he would return to full strength even if he had the procedure, Carr has decided to call it a career instead.
During a Tuesday appearance on NFL Network's "The Insiders," Carr's older brother David, an analyst who was also an NFL quarterback, was asked if there is a chance Derek could change his mind about retirement. David does not see that happening.
"It's a great question. A couple people have asked us that and have asked me personally. I believe that he is done," David Carr said. "I know that Derek loves the game. Here's what I'll tell you: More than anything, he loved the teammates. He loved being around the personalities. ...
"... I can just tell in the last couple of days that he's definitely done playing and he's moved on. His family, his boys and his little girl, they're getting older and they're getting to the point where they want to have dad around more. That means more to him than anything else."
There has already been a lot of talk about Carr changing his mind, undergoing surgery and trying to return in 2026. The Saints would probably grant him his release if that happened, but chances are it will not.
Carr is 34 and has been banged up in recent years. Judging by the video his wife shared of him over the weekend, he seems to already be enjoying his retirement. Coming back from a major injury at this point in his career would probably be too much.
Carr had a record of 77-92 during the regular season. The former Fresno State star ranks 22nd on the NFL's all-time passing yardage list with 41,245 yards. Carr threw 257 touchdown passes and 112 interceptions during his 11-year NFL career.
