The Detroit Lions have been hit with allegations of cheating after their blue-and-silver jerseys appeared to 'blend in' with the end zone colours during their victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

In the season's first Sunday Night Football showdown, the Lions secured a 26-20 overtime win against the Rams. Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was outstanding, throwing for 317 yards along with a touchdown and an interception on his return to Detroit.

However, the Los Angeles defense couldn't handle the Lions' aggressive ground game in overtime, which concluded when David Montgomery stormed into the end zone. But one moment caught the attention of viewers, as Stafford seemed to be fooled leading to a crucial mistake.

Late in the second quarter, the Rams orchestrated a brilliant nine-play, 62-yard drive to the red zone, where the NFC West franchise hadn't committed a single turnover throughout the 2023 NFL season. But Stafford was tricked as the Lions wore blue-and-silver uniforms that matched the colour of the end zone and adjacent wall.

Stafford was seemingly undone by the colour clash, under pressure from Aidan Hutchinson, as he threw towards receiver Tyler Johnson only for Lions safety Kerby Joseph to intercept. The 36-year-old held his helmet in his hands following the interception, with commentators wondering if he even saw Joseph.

The play and potential camouflage divided fans. One took to X to post "Kind of genius by Lions" while another added "Home Field Advantage."

However, not everyone was impressed. Some fans questioned the legality of the tactic, with one user asking: "Is that even legal? ".

The Rams managed to bounce back in the second half, with Cooper Kupp scoring a touchdown to lead 20-17 in the fourth quarter. Detroit levelled the score with a late field goal, sending the game into overtime - marking the first instance of extra time in the 2024 NFL season - before Montgomery took control.

The match was a fascinating clash between the two franchises involved in the high-profile trade that saw the teams exchange quarterbacks. Rams quarterback Stafford spent 12 seasons with the Lions before being traded for a package that included Jared Goff, two first-round picks, and a third-round selection.

Both teams have come out as winners from the deal. Stafford led the Rams to victory in Super Bowl LVI, while the Lions are now equipped with top-tier talent across their team after reaching the NFC Championship last season. For some, Sunday night's game could be a preview of the NFC Championship in January.

In their upcoming games, Detroit will host the 1-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while the Rams are set to face off against the 0-1 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
