Detroit Lions Projected to Address Defensive Needs in 3-Round Mock Draft

When you have the best offense in the NFL, it makes it pretty easy to decide what you need to address in the offseason. That's the situation the Detroit Lions find themselves in right now.

The Lions led the NFL with 33.2 points per game, which was more than two points per game above any other team.

With so much offensive success and a ton of talent on that side of the ball, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the team focus heavily on the defense during the offense.

In a three-round mock draft he released on January 16, Athlon Sports' own Luke Easterling projected them to do just that.

In round one of the mock draft, they were predicted to select Ohio State edge rusher JT Tuimoloau with the round's last pick.

32 picks later, they were predicted to select Mississippi cornerback Trey Amos.

The first pick is an obvious fit. One of the biggest issues the Lions defense faces right now is they don't get many sacks. Their 38 sacks this season was the 10th-least in the NFL.

Next season, they'll have Aidan Hutchinson back, but they'll also be losing Za'Darius Smith. That will leave them needing somebody to line up opposite Hutchinson.

Tuimoloau has earned First Team All-Big Ten honors in each of the last three seasons. This season, he has racked up 11.5 sacks, 20 tackles for loss, and 56 total tackles.

He has also been playing his best football at the absolute right time. Tuimoloau had two sacks and three tackles for loss in Ohio State's win over Oregon.

He followed that up with one and a half sacks and two and a half tackles for loss against Texas.

Selecting a corner would be a bit more interesting of a move for the Lions.

They used their first two picks last season on corners, selecting Terrion Arnold in round one and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in round two.

However, Rakestraw has missed nine games this season and has yet to crack the starting lineup. Meanwhile, the Lions are set to lose Carlton Davis to free agency after the season is over.

That could make them decide to bring in another corner to compete with this year's rookies.

If they do, Amos could be a good fit for them.

Bleacher Report's scouting report on Amos actually named Davis as his pro comparison.

Amos had three interceptions and made 50 total tackles for a greatly improved Ole Miss defense in 2024.

He held opposing QBs to a completion percentage of just 51.6% and only allowed 4.5 yards per attempt when targeted.
