Detroit Lions third-year wide receiver Jameson Williams is in the midst of a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Performance-Enhancing Substances (PES) policy but now he’s in more hot water.
According to a report by WXYZ-TV, Williams was nearly arrested on Oct. 8 after Detroit police found a gun in a car in which he was a passenger.
That report states that Williams repeatedly tried to use his status as a Lions player to get officers’ attention but he was eventually told he was being arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. However, before he was taken to jail, a supervisor responded, made some calls and then released the 23-year-old.
Now, WXYZ reports that Detroit police are investigating why he was released instead of booked into jail.
According to the story, the Lions say they’re aware of the incident and the Detroit Police Department’s decision to reopen the matter.
The former first-round pick has had several issues already in his young career, including injuries early, a gambling suspension last year and his PES suspension in 2024. He was expected to take on a bigger role for the team this season and, through six games, had 17 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite his big-play ability, his inability to stay on the field for his various issues may cost him a spot down the line if he can’t straighten things out. His PES suspension runs through the team's game this weekend at Green Bay.
