Dodgers GM Talks Trade Deadline Strategy, Believes 2025 Team is Already Better Than 2024

The trade deadline is just one week away, and just about every contender is looking to make some last-minute additions to their rosters. The Los Angeles Dodgers are no different.

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said the organization will scope out the options that are available, even though just a couple months ago the same did everything they can to not buy at the deadline. He added that players tend to become more expensive as the deadline gets closer.

“We’ll see how these next few days come out and what everything looks like, but as of now our stance hasn’t changed on needing to go out and get additional pieces,” Gomes said.

“The prices are always crazy come the deadline,” he added.

Los Angeles has acquired several talented players at the deadline in the past that have gone on to make a significant impact down the line.

Last season, the Dodgers landed utility man Tommy Edman and reliever Michael Kopech in a three-team trade deal with the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox. Edman became the National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player in 2024, while Kopech was a major part of the Dodgers’ shutdown bullpen.

Of course, the Dodgers have a clear need in the bullpen, and Gomes said the organization will consider making a trade at the deadline.

“If there’s pieces here and there that make sense moving forward, we’ve never been afraid to make trades when we feel it’s a need,” Gomes said. “We’ll continue to assess. We’ll see what these next week to 10 days look like.”

As the team stands, Gomes believes the 2025 squad is better than the Dodgers’ team last season that won the World Series.

Los Angeles did not lose any major players from the 2024 World Series roster, except for starting pitchers Walker Buehler and Jack Flaherty. But the Dodgers re-signed Teoscar Hernández, Kiké Hernández and Edman, while also acquiring new talent like Blake Snell, Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates and Hyeseong Kim.

“Over the long haul, big picture 162 (games) and what a potential playoff team will look like, this group is really talented and I would argue it’s better than the team that won the World Series last year,” Gomes said.

Los Angeles has had a stretch of losses over the past few weeks which has bumped them down to third in the NL. But the Dodgers are slowly seeing several of their starting pitchers return from the injured list and still lead the NL West.
