Dodgers Pitcher Elects to Leave Organization, Head to Free Agency

Veteran right-handed pitcher J.P. Feyereisen, who was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend, has cleared waivers and rejected his outright assignment. Instead, he'll head to free agency.

Feyereisen has already played for two National League West teams this season, as he began the year with the Arizona Diamondbacks after signing a minor league deal in March.

However, after just two appearances with Arizona - in which he allowed two earned runs over two innings of work - he was designated for assignment and claimed off waivers by the Dodgers.

Feyereisen struggled mightily with L.A., making two appearances and allowing three earned runs over two innings of work. Now, he'll look for his third team of 2025 with a few days left in the month of May.

This was Feyereisen's second stint with the Dodgers, as he was acquired by Los Angeles in December 2022 from the Tampa Bay Rays. Feyereisen was rehabbing shoulder surgery at the time of the trade, and didn't suit up for the entire 2023 season.

In 2024, he ended up making 10 appearances, sporting an 8.18 ERA over 11 innings of work. He went to free agency at the end of the season.

Feyereisen, 32, was initially drafted by the then-Cleveland Indians in the 16th round of the 2014 MLB Draft. He was traded to the New York Yankees ahead of the 2016 trade deadline in the blockbuster deal that sent Andrew Miller to Cleveland. He was then traded again a few years later in 2019, this time to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Feyereisen debuted with the Brewers in 2020, and made 21 appearances with Milwaukee in 2021 before being traded to the Rays, where he developed into a dominant reliever.

Across 34 appearances out of the Tampa Bay bullpen in 2021, Feyereisen had a 2.45 ERA. Then, across 22 appearances in 2022, he had a 0.00 ERA, allowing zero earned runs over 24.1 innings of work.

Feyereisen hasn't been able to get back to that level of dominance since coming back from surgery, but will hope to do it with whichever team gives him an opportunity next.
