Quarterback is the cornerstone position in the NFL. In all of football actually, you have to have that position nailed in order to find long-term success. For the New Orleans Saints, they've got a battle going on between Tyler Shough and Spencer Rattler for the starting role.
A veteran offensive lineman for the Saints provided some insight into the competition that's been brewing and will continue in training camp and the preseason, ahead of regular season play under head coach Kellen Moore.
Cesar Ruiz talks Saints QB situation
Ruiz is intrigued by how both quarterbacks have attacked the battle. They're both proving themselves, and the rookie Shough has been given every chance to try to win it over Rattler.
"Two different quarterbacks, right? Everybody has their superpower. Everybody is good at their thing. Spencer has something, and I'm like, hey, he got that. Tyler will come in there, and I'm like, hey... This is just talent. When you see two talented guys just competing, it's truly fun to see.
"I know you guys touched on [that] we drafted (Shough) early. We drafted him second round, 40th overall, still super early in the draft. ... I think just because we drafted a quarterback super early doesn't mean you have to push him in there and play. I was drafted 24th overall as an offensive lineman, and I didn't end up starting until Week 4. I was in and out of the lineup my rookie year. I think it's about development. It's about who you see fit right now." -- Cesar Ruiz via Good Morning Football

From the OL's experience, time can be key for development. He doesn't want the Saints to feel like they must start Shough just because he is the intriguing rookie. at the same time, if he proves to be the top option, then it is also well deserved.
New Orleans will have to see what the two potential starters show in camp and some in-game action during the exhibitions of the preseason. Based on those, Moore will have to make the difficult, but necessary, decision on who should lead the team to start the games that count.
