Dolphins release perfect backup quarterback for Packers to sign

It's not the most exciting move, but the Packers should have interest.

The Green Bay Packers still don't know who will back up Jordan Love this season.

Neither Sean Clifford nor Michael Pratt pulled away in the positional battle this summer. Pratt outperformed Clifford, including in the preseason finale, but he still isn't ready for backup duties so early in his career.

Following Saturday's preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur hinted at the possibility of adding a veteran via the waiver wire.

It likely won't be Ryan Tannehill. He is available. The Packers probably would've already made that signing if they had serious interest. Instead, they will need to look around the league at recently released quarterbacks who could make sense.

Enter the Miami Dolphins.

Packers should kick the tires on former Dolphins QB Mike White

Mike White isn't exactly a game-changer at the quarterback position, but none of the available quarterbacks are. White lost out on the Dolphins' backup quarterback job after a stellar performance from Skylar Thompson in their final preseason game.

White is a backup for a reason, but there are reasons why a move to Green Bay would make sense.

He has experience in Mike McDaniel's system, which shares similarities to Matt LaFleur's. There likely wouldn't be much of an adjustment period.

White also has NFL experience, something the Packers' current backups lack—Clifford has thrown one regular-season pass and Pratt is a rookie. White has been in the league for longer and started seven career games, throwing for 2,219 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Again, they are hardly MVP numbers, but the Packers aren't going to find a player on Jordan Love's level on the waiver wire.

With understanding of the system and experience in the league, White could be a capable stopgap starter if Love had to miss a few games. LaFleur has a quarterback-friendly scheme, and the Packers have a ton of weapons to make life easier. As a game manager who can make safe throws to Green Bay's receivers, White could step in and help the team.

Give Pratt a year on the practice squad and sign a veteran. That's an approach the Packers may take.

White's availability could interest them.
