Dolphins Trade Idea With Lions Nets Standout Cornerback

The Miami Dolphins are in win-now mode, and with a glaring hole at one of the boundary cornerback spots, a move needs to be made. Instead of trying to get one in the NFL Draft, this trade idea has the Dolphins and Detroit Lions swinging a deal for one of the Lions' cornerbacks.

No love lost between Detroit Lions CB Amik Robertson and Packers: 'They know it's smoke'

This trade pitch has the Dolphins sending a fourth-round pick for Lions cornerback Amik Robertson. Robertson would become the Dolphins number two cornerback opposite Jalen Ramsey, and round out the cornerback room in Miami.

Despite being looked down upon for his size at five-foot-nine, 183 pounds, Robertson made a name for himself thanks to one game. Robertson had the tough task of going one-on-one with All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson, and he shined while doing so.

Robertson held Jefferson to just 48 yards on six targets, while also breaking up a pass heading his direction. He tallied five tackles and was great in run support. After the game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell awarded Robertson with a game ball.

He had been a slot-only cornerback his entire season but got starts outside due to injury. He thrived in the new role on the outside. With Miami in need of an outside cornerback, Robertson could be a cost-effective addition to make.

Detroit has a lot of cornerback depth, and could part with Robertson without putting a dent into the roster. Miami meanwhile, would benefit immensely from adding someone of Robertsons skillset.

In 2024, Robertson allowed 46 receptions for 576 yards and two touchdowns. He had his career high in pass breakups with seven and was incredible in the run game. Pro Football Focus gave Robertson a very high 89.7 run defense grade, which was the sixth highest in the NFL.

Adding Robertson would be a huge addition for the Dolphins secondary. He wouldn't cost a lot, both in terms of trade compensation and monetary investment. Just a fourth-round pick for Robertson is well worth it for Miami.

This trade pitch has the Dolphins rounding out the cornerback room by trading for Robertson from the Lions. He'd start outside opposite Ramsey, with Kohou in the slot.
