Eagles $255 Million Super Bowl MVP Dealing With ‘Crazy’ Coaching Change

In the NFL, it’s a given that offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator positions are going to have a high turnover rate, for better or worse.

Jalen Hurts and Shane Steichen

When you’ve reached that point of your career, the tolerance for doing your job poorly can be even more cutthroat than being a head coach. Remember that a struggling head coach can usually buy themselves another year by firing one or both of their coordinators.

On the flip side, every struggling NFL team is on the lookout for the Next Great Coordinator to be their Next Great Head Coach.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and reigning Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts knows this dance better than most. ESPN’s Mina Kimes pointed out on a recent episode of “The Mina Kimes Show” that Hurts has had a “Crazy” number off offensive coordinators in his career.

Mines isn’t wrong. With the hiring Kevin Patullo in 2025, Hurts will be playing for his fifth offensive coordinator in 6 seasons. Patullo was promoted after spending the last 4 seasons as pass game coordinator and associate head coach.

“So, Jalen Hurts gets another coach,” Mines said. “Kellen Moore is out. And they went internal with Kevin Patullo … and there’s pluses and minuses on his resume. He’s worked with Hurts a long time. He’s been their pass game coordinator. He knows Hurts … he knows their wide receivers. He knows what they’re good at. He knows how to use them. But he’s also (head coach) Nick Sirianni’s dude. And, you know, I think there was some benefit from going outside the building.”

It’s hard to argue with Kimes’ reasoning. Moore came to the Eagles from the Los Angeles Chargers for one season in 2024 and was hired as the new head coach of the New Orleans Saints just days after the Eagles beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on February 9.

Brief History Of Hurts And Offensive Coordinators

Hurts took over as the starter at the end of his rookie year — a season defined by Pederson’s firing and the Super Bowl winning coach being accused by players of deliberately trying to tank the regular season finale by pulling Hurts in place of Nate Sudfeld.

Hurts blossomed the next 2 years under offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, including his first NFL All-Pro nod and a Super Bowl appearance in 2022 before Steichen was hired as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Hurts was rewarded with a 5-year, $255 million contract extension.

In 2023, Sirianni promoted Brian Johnson, the Eagles quarterbacks coach in 2021 and 2022, to offensive coordinator. It backfired. Hurts regressed and the Eagles stumbled to an 11-6 regular season record after a 10-1 start and were knocked out of the playoffs in the NFC Wild Card Round and Johnson was fired.

Patullo Followed Sirianni From Indy To Philly

Patullo has worked with Sirianni since he was offensive coordinator for the Colts from 2018 to 2020 and followed him to the Eagles when he was hired as head coach.

“I can’t tell you that I make a decision without saying to Kevin first, ‘What do you think?’ That’s in everything,” Sirianni told Eagles.com on February 19. “That’s in-game, out of game, with scheduling, that’s with offensive stuff, that’s with game-management stuff, I lean on him a lot …  Can’t be great without the greatness of others and that is definitely a fact with Kevin Patullo and I trust him with everything.”
