Down 12-7 to the New Orleans Saints with 2:03 left in the fourth quarter, the Philadelphia Eagles marched down the field on a five-play, 69-yard touchdown drive to take a 15-12 lead with 1:01 left in regulation.
Looking to stage a fourth-quarter comeback, Derek Carr tried to hit Rashid Shaheed deep downfield only to be intercepted by Reed Blankenship near midfield and preserve the win for Philly.
After the game, former Saints, now Eagles defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson sounded off on the win, throwing Carr under the bus with a savage roast in the process.
“They ain't no contenders, they're pretenders,” Gardner-Johnson said, via NFL Network’s Bridget Condon. “They have Derek Carr, remember that.”
“… We knew he was going to give us [a turnover] all day,” Gardner-Johnson added, via The 33rd Team. “…How are you the best offense with only two games played? We still got, what, 16 weeks to go?”
After throwing for 443 yards, five touchdowns and one interception with a 133.7 passer rating through the first two weeks of the season, Carr finished with only 142 yards, a touchdown and an interception with a 69.1 passer rating on Sunday.
Gardner-Johnson’s remarks seem to be about more than just his dislike for Carr. The 26-year-old safety appears to have a personal vendetta against his former team for trading him to the Eagles back in 2021 along with a seventh-round pick for fifth- and sixth-round picks.
“They got rid of me, I (didn't) get rid of them,” Gardner-Johnson remarked.
