Nick Sirianni and the Philadelphia Eagles saw their 10-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 36-33 loss to NFC East foe, the Washington Commanders, in the nation's capital.
The Eagles had to play most of the game with backup quarterback Kenny Pickett under center after Jalen Hurts was put into concussion protocol with just under ten minutes remaining in the first, leaving him ruled out.
Still, Philadelphia held the lead for most of the game before the Commanders went up by one with 9:08 remaining. Pickett, the former Pittsburgh Panthers star, led the Eagles to two field goal drives in the final four minutes, giving his team a 33-28 advantage with under two minutes to play.
But Jayden Daniels led the Commanders to the game-winning drive, hitting wide receiver Jamison Crowder in the end zone to take the lead with six seconds left.
After the game, Sirianni, the fourth-year head coach, spoke to the media, blaming himself for his team's "sloppy play," which ultimately led to the loss.
"Just sloppy," Sirianni said. "Sloppy with penalties. Sloppy with too many men on the field. Sloppy with our fundamentals. When you play a good football team like we played today and you're sloppy... it's going to be hard to win. I said to those guys, 'When it’s sloppy with every piece of that, it’s always going to be on me as the head coach.'"
Despite forcing five Commanders turnovers, the Eagles' biggest flaw of the day was penalties, recording ten for 91 yards. They also had two turnovers of their own.
With the loss, Philadelphia falls to 12-3 on the season and is no longer tied for the best record in the NFC. Up next for Sirianni and company is the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17.
