The Philadelphia Eagles signed former New Orleans Saints linebacker Zack Baun to a one-year, $1.6 million contract during NFL free agency back in March.
That is a very cheap contract which has made him look like an absolute offseason steal with the way he has performed for the Birds' defense through the last 10 weeks.
In the Eagles' latest 34-6 blowout win over the Dallas Cowboys, Baun was responsible for two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Over the last three weeks, Baun has racked up 30 tackles, two tackles for loss, an interception, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
After the Eagles win over Dallas, head coach Nick Sirianni gave Baun what he calls, "the best compliment."
"Man, he just keeps getting better," Sirianni said. "...Zack’s a great athlete. He's tough. You see him in the open field making tackles. You see him sticking his face in there in tight quarters. You see him being able to rush. He's on a streak right now of taking the football away and the ball being on his mind. I just think he's a really good football player.
"The best compliment I can give a guy is he’s a really good football player. That happens when you're tough, you're physical, detailed, and he’s playing really fundamentally sound and just getting better every time he steps out in the field."
While Baun is playing at an extremely high level on a much lower deal, he's not too worried about his future paycheck right now.
“No, no. It’s one game at a time," Baun said. "I’m just trying to get better. The linebacker room is trying to get better. This defense is trying to get better, and I’m glad it’s showing up."
If he keeps it up, there is definitely a higher payday and future for him in Philly.
