The Philadelphia Eagles could well be en route to another season in which they reach, or heavily contend for the coveted Super Bowl, despite losing multiple starters in free agency.
The only area where there could be legitimate reasons for concern is at cornerback, where neither Kelee Ringo nor Adoree’ Jackson are looking like particularly attractive options at the second outside corner position.
Ringo played decently when needed in 2024, but the Eagles will have to see a lot out of the former Georgia man to convince them that the one-time fourth round pick with just five pro starts is the guy to take them forward at the position. And whilst Adoree’ Jackson has substantial experience playing at a high level, turning 30 in September he is past his prime.
So Eagles reporter, Anthony DiBona, of The Philly Special Show, postulates that their are two trades that fans should watch out for if neither Jackson nor Ringo establish their spot in training camp and pre-season. One of them is for Cleveland Browns ex first round corner, Greg Newsome II.
Browns Corner A Trade Option To Watch For The Eagles
“”Roseman isn’t afraid to make trades in August and there is one target at cornerback that would make a ton of sense for the Eagles in 2025.” DiBona wrote back in June.
“Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II is heading into the final year of his rookie contract after the team exercised his fifth-year option. Newsome has been involved in trade rumors dating back to last season’s trade deadline, yet he remains in Cleveland for now.
Despite being set to make $13.3 million in 2025, Philadelphia has plenty of cap space to potentially trade for Newsome. He is just 25-years-old and Roseman has shown a willingness to take a chance on former high draft picks in the past, similar to his trade for Dotson in 2024.”
Would Greg Newsome Be a Fit In Philadelphia?
DiBona explains that whilst Newsome’s primary role has come in the slot in Cleveland – a position that is currently being taken by Super Bowl LIX star, Cooper DeJean, he has the capabilities to play on the perimeter as well.
“Newsome would provide Philadelphia with versatility at cornerback, given his usage in Cleveland. While Samuel has primarily played outside cornerback in the NFL, Newsome can play anywhere. He has played 1,428 snaps at outside cornerback and 1,163 snaps at slot cornerback, according to Pro Football Focus.
After three strong seasons to start his career in Cleveland, Newsome saw his role decreased in 2024. He was eventually demoted to the third cornerback spot before ending the season on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury. It’s clear that Newsome’s time with the Browns could be coming to an end.”
Newsome’s contract is up at the end of the season, after he finishes playing on his $13.4 million fifth year option in 2025.
With the organization already paying fellow cornerback, Denzel Ward, with other perimeter CB, Martin Emerson, also out of contract at the end of this season, the Browns could well be amenable to moving one of their corners. And Philly could be a great fit.
