Eagles Lose Starter, Projected $40 Million Player to AFC in Latest Free Agency Blow

The Philadelphia Eagles won the second Super Bowl in franchise history back in February, besting the Kansas City Chiefs in an 18-point blowout. But the team has faced several significant losses since then via free agency.

Eagles Lose Starter, Projected $40 Million Player to AFC in Latest Free Agency Blow

The most recent hit came by way of the departure of offensive lineman Mekhi Becton, who left Philadelphia in favor of a new contract from the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Chargers took to social media on Friday, March 14, to announce and celebrate the new addition to their offensive line.

"Big ticket to L.A.," the team posted to its official X account. "We've signed [offensive guard] Mekhi Becton."

Becton joined the NFL as the No. 11 overall pick of the New York Jets in the 2020 draft, where he played offensive tackle for four seasons. The Jets chose not to pick up the fifth-year team option on Becton's deal ahead of the 2023 campaign, and he joined the Eagles' roster the following year.

"Becton’s time with the Jets was underwhelming, largely due to injury. He signed a one-year deal with the Eagles last year after playing out his rookie contract," Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk wrote Friday. "The Eagles moved him to right guard in 2024, and he quickly meshed with the best offensive line in the league."

Florio added a brief report on the details of Becton's contract in L.A.

"It’s reportedly a two-year deal," he continued. "No other terms have been disclosed."

Spotrac projected Becton's market value at just under $41 million total over a new four-year deal (approximately $10.2 million annually).
