Eagles Offseason Trade Called 'Biggest Impact' of 2025

The move that sent Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to Houston will have a major impact on the Philadelphia Eagles.

Eagles' offseason: NFL schedule, key dates after 2024 NFL draft

It was the most perplexing move the Philadelphia Eagles made all offseason. The trade of Pro Bowl caliber safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson shocked fans across the country.

After leading the team in interceptions for the second time in three years, Gardner-Johnson was seen as indispensable for the organization. Gardner-Johnson played with the Eagles in 2022 and 2024. The Eagles made the Super Bowl in both seasons he played.

The one year he wasn't on the team in that stretch (2023), the Eagles defense was among the worst in the league. The organization also was blown out in their first playoff game.

The evidence was clear. Philadelphia is better when Gardner-Johnson is on their team.

Perhaps that is why NFL.com's Nick Shook called the deal that sent Gardner-Johnson to Houston one of the "biggest impact" departures of the offseason.

"Gardner-Johnson has not played for the same team in consecutive years since 2020-2021, when he was on his rookie deal with the Saints, but he helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl last season in his second stint with the team," Shook said. "Fresh off a championship, Philadelphia traded him to the Texans with budgetary concerns in mind.

"Moves like that one can help the Eagles remain competitive, but such deals only work if the replacements produce."

The Eagles are hoping young safeties like Sydney Brown and 2025 second-round pick Andrew Mukuba can replace Gardner-Johnson this season.

If they cannot, it will only add further scrutiny to the move that sent the outspoken safety to Texas.
