Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts Gets Shoutout From ‘Superman’ Star

As far as endorsements go, getting one from the Man of Steel has to be pretty high up there.

David Corenswet

During the press tour promoting his role as the title character in director James Gunn’s new “Superman” movie, actor and Philadelphia native David Corenswet, a lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan, didn’t hesitate when asked to pick between Superman and Super Bowl MVP quarterback Jalen Hurts when asked who he would choose to run a Tush Push play if a game was on the line and his team needed one yard.

“I’d say Jalen Hurts,” Corenswet said. “I expect that there’s a lot more technique and organization involved in the mechanics and success of the Tush Push than meets the eye … and Superman, he’d just end up tripping over his feet or something and, you know, I’d trust Jalen with it … not that I know him or anything, so Mr. Hurts is probably better.”

Actress Rachel Brosnahan, who plays reporter Lois Lane in the film, chimed in quickly after Corenswet’s answer.

“What’s a Tush Push?” Brosnahan asked.

“Superman” was released on July 11 and is the long awaited first feature film in the new DC Universe, spearheaded by Gunn. According to Deadline, “Superman” was on pace to make approximately $210 million at the worldwide box office over its opening weekend.

‘Superman’ Has Long History Of Football References

The “Superman” film, comic book and television canon has its own long history of football references — most notably centered around a young Clark Kent pining to play for the Smallville High team yet can’t in order to keep his otherworldly abilities hidden.

In the first film in the original “Superman” film series starring the late Christopher Reeve, teenage Clark is the equipment manager for Smallville High and, after being bullied by some guys on the team, punts a football into the upper atmosphere.

In the long running television series “Smallville” there are a half-dozen episodes that feature football as a main plot point, including one in which a high school aged Clark, played by Tom Welling, becomes Smallville High’s starting quarterback and another where he is recruited to play big time college football for fictional Metropolis University.

Corenswet Joins Ranks Of Famous Eagles Fans

With the first 2 Super Bowl wins in franchise history and another Super Bowl appearance in the last decade, there has never been a better time to be a famous Eagles fan. Corenswet joins those ranks after his star turn as one of the most iconic characters in pop culture history.

Leading that pack of famous fans is 12-time Academy Award nominated actor, director, writer and producer Bradley Cooper, who led the Eagles out of the tunnel with an “E-A-G-L-E-S” chant and onto the field before their 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX.

In an interview with Howard Stern in November 2023, Cooper was asked by Stern, if he had a choice, whether he would choose to win the Best Actor and Director Oscars for his 2023 film “Maestro” as well as a Best Actress Oscar win for Carey Mulligan or have the Eagles win the Super Bowl.

Cooper didn’t hesitate to pick the Eagles.

“Eagles,” Cooper said. “I’m not lying … I’m sick, bro … it’s the Eagles.”
