One thing that every NFL fan knows is that the Philadelphia Eagles have an absolute bully on the offensive line. Doesn't matter if they are tackles, guards or a center.
ESPN NFL analyst Mike Clay collaborated with other analysts within the network as the group named the Eagles the second-best lineup in the league. What is the biggest strength of the starting lineup? Offensive tackles, led by Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson.
"The defending champs have many strengths, but it's tough to beat arguably the league's top tackle duo, with Jordan Mailata manning the left side and Lane Johnson on the right. Mailata ranked among the top tackles in PFF grade, pass block win rate and run block win rate in both 2023 and 2024. Johnson is 35 years old but hasn't lost a step, ranking top 10 among tackles in pass and run block win rate last season."
Mailata and Johnson keep getting their flowers and we are all here for it
It feels like it is a never-ending cycle of every media member, network, or publication acknowledging that the Eagles' tackles on offense are good. Last week, ESPN shared that Johnson was ranked third and Mailata was ranked fifth among NFL personnel for best offensive tackles in the NFL.
The interesting debate that isn't being discussed is whether Mailata or Johnson is better. Pro Football Focus had Mailata ranked as the number one tackle in the league, while Johnson was ranked fifth. When it comes to betting odds on who will win the Protector of the Year award, Johnson has the second-best odds, while Mailata was fifth.
Johnson has had the more established resume, having been named to six Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pro selections. Mailata has stunningly not been selected to a single Pro Bowl, but was a second-team All-Pro selection last year and even got votes for Offensive Player of the Year, which was won by his teammate Saquon Barkley.
Both guys have been so dominant for the Eagles over the last five years, covering the bookends of the line. Philly has been consistently in the top five in rushing yards year after year and has given quarterback Jalen Hurts the protection he needs.
It appears Mailata and Johnson will be holding down their positions for a long time, with Johnson being in line for the Hall of Fame. Eagles fans hope Mailata will get there, but he needs to start receiving more attention from the mainstream sports media. Looks like this is finally happening.
