Dodgers right-hander Evan Phillips faced hitters on Saturday, and will throw another bullpen session on Monday or Tuesday in Anaheim as he works his way back from a right shoulder strain suffered last October.
Phillips likened his progression to a spring training build-up, in that he might need five or six game outings before being activated from the injured list. He’ll be in Los Angeles for the championship ring ceremony on Friday night, the same day Triple-A Oklahoma City starts its schedule.
It doesn’t sound like Michael Kopech will return anytime soon from his shoulder impingement.
“He’s kind of in a holding pattern,” manager Dave Roberts said. “It’s not a setback, but just where he’s at, the build-up, where he’s at. He’s been kind of stagnant lately.”
The Dodgers have been vague about Kopech’s injuries dating back to last October. He was reported to have arm inflammation, but is on the injured list with a shoulder impingement. Roberts on Sunday said Kopech was dealing with the shoulder injury last year as well.
“Last year, going through the grind, the intensity, and then he got sick in the offseason where it cut back is ramp up,” Roberts said. “That really set him back, quite honestly, a few weeks in itself.”
Tony Gonsolin, on the injured list with back tightness, will throw a bullpen session this week, and will continue to build up innings as a starter, though there isn’t a set timetable for his return.
