Everything now hinges on how Commanders unleash their newest X-factor

There is an enormous amount of intrigue surrounding the Washington Commanders in 2025. One NFL analyst highlighted how important Deebo Samuel Sr.'s usage could be to their chances of making the Super Bowl next season.

Deebo Samuel Sr.

Samuel was acquired via trade from the San Francisco 49ers to kick off Adam Peters' blockbuster recruitment period. The gifted wide receiver was deemed a lost cause by his previous employers, but that was not an opinion shared by Washington's general manager.

Considering it cost the Commanders just a fifth-round selection to get Samuel, it's the definition of a low-risk, high-reward pickup. The former second-round selection looks in shape at OTAs, and Washington brought in Wes Welker to ensure he stays on the right track. The early signs are positive, but there is a long way to go.

NFL analyst highlights Deebo Samuel's usage as key to Commanders' chances

Garrett Podell from CBS Sports highlighted how the Commanders plan to utilize Samuel's skill set as something that could define their chances in 2025. The previous production is there for all to see. What the analyst wants to know is whether Kliff Kingsbury's creativity can get the South Carolina graduate back to his previous All-Pro standards.

"There was a prevailing sentiment that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was uniquely positioned to maximize [Deebo] Samuel's unique talents for many years. He is the only player in the Super Bowl era with at least 4,500 receiving yards and 1,000 rushing yards in his first six seasons in the Super Bowl era. Samuel also leads all wide receivers in yards after catch (3,084) and yards after catch per reception (9.2) since entering the league in 2019. Will [Kliff] Kingsbury utilize him traditionally, or in a more dual-threat capacity with Samuel now 29 and entering his seventh NFL season? OTAs could be the first chance to observe such details."

Samuel's versatility is something that sets him apart. The wideout can line up anywhere, even in the backfield when the situation dictates. This is something the Commanders didn't have last season, and it's undeniably the best running mate Terry McLaurin's ever had.

It could go wrong, but the Commanders can move off Samuel easily in 2026. He's playing in the final year of his deal, so there's the added incentive of another contract in Washington or elsewhere. More money is always a strong motivator, so there's a good chance he can remind the world why he was considered among the league's most prolific playmakers once upon a time.

Kingsbury's role is also key. The offensive coordinator galvanized his career last season and resisted head coaching opportunities to run it back in Washington. He likes to get the football into the hands of his weapons quickly. This should be music to Samuel's ears.

It wasn't that long ago when Samuel was considered a superstar. If he can get back to anything like that production, the Commanders' offense will be a problem.
